Are you eager to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable world by deepening our understanding of the world of molecules and drug discovery using research data obtained in our Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences within the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam? Then join us as a Research Data Analyst in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences!

Location: AMSTERDAM
FTE: 1.0

Job description

In our department, complex analysis of large sets of data (e.g. from DNA/RNA sequencing, 2D/3D NMR or mass spectroscopy, interactomics, (phospho)proteomics and metabolomics, imaging, or molecular modeling) plays an increasingly important role to unravel the interplay and modes of action of molecules, such as in case of a drug targeting a biomolecule of interest. By deepening our understanding of molecular properties, intermolecular interactions and their tunability, we aim for a healthier and more sustainable world. As a Research Data Analyst you will directly and actively contribute to this mission. You will consult, teach and assist staff members and students in medicinal and bioanalytical chemistry, chemical biology, and molecular toxicology, in the design, optimization and standardization of novel or existing tools and workflows for advanced data analysis, and in the translation of data to the level of abstraction required to identify and learn from relations between observables and (bio)molecular properties, interaction and structure. Where needed you will (possibly in consultation with available data management expertise in our institute) advise our staff in improving the interoperability and/or reusability of lab or simulation data to facilitate/enable complex analysis tasks.

Your duties

  • Consultation in and design and verification of (advanced) statistical analysis of research data
  • Development and integration of new or existing data analysis tools in reusable/standardized workflows
  • Identify and explore possibilities for interoperability in complex data analysis tasks
  • Teach and assist students in statistical analysis of research data, both in a lab environment and within a dedicated MSc level course
  • Advise staff members and students in good FAIR research data management practices that support (big) data analysis, e.g., data interoperability and reusability

Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in Data Science, Cheminformatics, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Computational (Bio)chemistry, or related
  • Experienced in handling large/complex data sets, and practical programming and data science experience/skills to support data analysis tasks, e.g. proficiency in Python, R and/or C/C++; experience with shell scripting, pipelining tools and/or databases
  • Affinity for (research in) chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences and/or life sciences. A basic academic background in chemistry is required; background in bioinformatics or systems biology and/or advanced background in (bio)chemistry are a plus
  • Proficiency in advanced statistical analysis techniques and experience in machine and/or deep learning
  • Experience with KNIME or other analytics platforms is a plus
  • Affinity for data management and/or curation/annotation and FAIR principles is a plus (possibilities will be offered to follow relevant courses)
  • Team player and strong communicator, and proficient in English
